Opening up a restaurant is a dream for many people. You may want to specialise in a particular cuisine, perhaps share some of the most well-loved and recipes that have been handed down through generations. Whatever your inspiration for wanting to do it, you should know that it isn’t an easy road ahead. There is plenty to think about. Of course, you may have already sorted your business plan, perhaps even got investment. Maybe you have chosen the location and gotten the ball rolling. However, there are many things you can forget within the process, and I thought I would share with you some of the most common ones.

1. Trying Out the Dishes and Menu Before Opening

One small problem that some restaurant owners face is deciding on the menu. However, it is such a huge part of your restaurant, after all, people will be heading to your establishment to eat. So the food has to be right and in line with your vision. You may be happy with the dishes, you may love the menu you are offering, but what about the general public? This is why you need to try out the dishes and menu before opening. Get a focus group, invite some diners in for a special preview and gain some valuable feedback. You also need to consider how many dishes you offer, having too many can put too much pressure on a kitchen. Meaning you serve lots of mediocre food, rather than food of fantastic quality.

2. The Layout of Your Kitchen and What You Might Need

You may have spent a lot of time deciding on the location of your restaurant Perhaps you have secured an amazing spot on the high street with lots of footfall and passers by, maybe even offering parking for diners. But the layout inside is just as important and often can be a sidelined decision. Where does the kitchen sit? Do you require a food elevator to transport dishes from one floor to another? You need to ensure that the seating arrangement works well with a full restaurant of diners. Can waiter staff move seamlessly without disturbing a chair or table? Does it work well? Take time to consider the inside and even the decor as well, it’s just as important as the location.

3. The Way You Will Advertise Your Restaurant Once Opened

You may not even be thinking about advertising right now, but what will you do when the doors open and you have no customers? This is why you need to ensure you have a decent advertising strategy in place, and one of the best and cheapest ways to do it, is to consider things like social media such as Facebook or Instagram. Create a hashtag for people to sue when dining, who doesn’t love to take a picture of their plate of food before eating? Schedule engaging content and share your successes and offers with people.
