Running a business can be difficult enough, but running a business in the hospitality industry is even harder. Whereas most bosses get to go home at the end of the day, hospitality is never ending. There is always some situation that arises that needs your attention. It is like everyone who eats in a restaurant knows the phrase ‘can I speak to the manager, please’?

As it is, you have enough on your plate trying to please your customers to worry about anything else. But, because this is not a perfect world, there is plenty to worry about, and one is just as important as the next. To help take some of the strain off your shoulders, we have come up with some ideas to boost efficiency. Hopefully, with these tips, your business will run itself.

1. Offer Incentives

Your workforce is the first point of contact, so they need to be motivated to achieve and succeed. Unfortunately, not everyone is motivated by job satisfaction. What tends to motivate people more is money, or the opportunity to make more money. A few financial incentives over the course of the year should boost productivity in the workplace by quite a margin.

2. Cut Back On Costs

Cutting back on costs is one of the main tips that any novice, intermediate or professional will give you if you ask for advice. It is so simple that everyone knows about it, but it is also so effective that even the best of the best have to cut back. As a smaller business, reducing your expenditures is more important than ever because it takes a lot of time to make a profit. In the world of hospitality, however, you don’t have the time or the luxury of saving your cash. To reduce your inevitable spending spree, try and buy whatever you can from wholesalers. Buying wholesale table runners to wholesale plates and eating utensils will save you thousands a year.

3. Use One Employee For More Than One Job

The good thing about hospitality is the fact that some of the jobs are not specialist jobs. Of course, you can hire one person to perform the job, but that adds to the payroll. Instead, merge two roles into one. For example, ask the people at the front desk to help guests with the bags or coats, or ask them to show them to their rooms. You only need one person at reception to take care of bookings and general admin work. Plus, they should be able to cope on their own for a few minutes.

4. Communicate Effectively

So much of working in the hospitality is communicating with other people to tell them about problems that need fixing. So, as a boss, you need to put a huge emphasis on good communication skills. Furthermore, you need to lead by example. Make sure you talk to your staff in a clear and concise manner so they understand the task and can do it with the minimum of fuss. Plus, that encourages the staff to communicate with each other in the same manner.

One rule of running a business that you should never forget is that the business has to be efficient to achieve its goals. If it is not, you increase the risk of failure.
