Most businesses in the retail sector have a delivery side of their business. Many use other delivery companies, but it could be a good idea to start your own delivery fleet. That way you have control over the delivery process, and you can make sure that your products don’t get damaged in transit.

Here are a few things you should know about starting a delivery fleet.

1. Choosing The Right Insurance Option Is Vital

Having vans on the road means getting them insured. Don’t make the common mistake of getting each van individually insured though. This is a complete waste of time and money, but it’s something many small businesses do.

Instead, you should make sure you find the best fleet insurance policy out there. A fleet insurance policy will cover all your vehicles, cutting the cost dramatically.

2. You’ll Need To Think About Parking And Storage

When you have a fleet of vans, you need to think about where you want to store them. If you have a parking lot that you can use or a large garage space to store them in, you can use that. But if not, you’ll have to come up with a solution to the parking problem. If there’s somewhere you can create a car park nearby, take that option.

Creating a good, safe and secure car park is not easy. You should probably hire a professional contracting company to do the work for you if you don’t know what you’re doing. There are plenty of competent companies that offer commercial paving services.

3. The Hiring Stage Is the Most Important

Employing the right drivers could be the difference between success and failure when starting up a delivery fleet. These are the guys who are going to be in charge of the delivery and representing your business on the road and in the communities. Remember, the vans will have the company name and logo plastered across them, so people will associate the behaviour of your drivers with your business.

So, when it comes to hiring the right drivers, focus on their skills, experience and personality. You obviously need to make sure they have a clean license and a good reference from a former employer. And if they come across as rude or dismissive when you talk to them, think twice about hiring them.

4. Start Small And Grow

Your fleet doesn’t need to be huge to start with; that could end up being a waste of money. If you’re delivering your own products, you will only need the amount of vehicles necessary to cover your current sales level. This is the most sensible route to take because growth and increased sales can never be taken for granted.

It’s still a good idea to leave yourself room to grow though. So, as your business begins to grow, you should start to reinvest some of the money you make into improving and expanding your delivery service. You could buy a new van and hire a new driver as soon as your current fleet starts to feel the strain.
