We’ve all worked in dark, stuffy offices. The plastic cubicle walls, harsh strip lights, and instant coffee are enough to drain your soul! Understandably, these offices are filled with cost-saving materials. But, what their bosses don’t realise is that it’s having a drastic effect on their employee’s productivity. As workers, we thrive in comfortable, light, and airy spaces. We feel content, and motivated to work better. The office environment really does affect the work ethic. With that in mind, here are your six steps to a better office.

1. Airflow and Temperature

It’s these subtle changes that make all the difference. Studies have shown that poor air quality has a significant effect on the health and productivity of workers. Dust particles are a particular problem here. One thing you can do is upgrade to nordfab qf ducting. It’s a modern way to circulate air, and purify the air around you. Temperature is another big factor in office productivity. The optimal temperature is around 21 degrees, so aim for that.

2. Lighting

There’s a reason those harsh strip lights seem to suck the life out of you! It’s proven that these lights can significantly lower energy levels. Unnatural lighting is a big drain on productivity. Where possible, try to maximise natural light through wide open windows. If you’re moving to a new office, look for skylights. They are super effective here.

3. Ergonomic Furniture

Your employees work much more effectively when they have a comfortable work space. That all starts with a good chair that provides support for the back. Over time, back problems can cause a great deal of discomfort for your workers. It will eat into their motivation, energy levels, and general health. A good chair is the best thing you can do to keep them happy!

4. Colours

Painting the walls a certain colour has a big effect on our mood. We all have an emotional or psychological response to certain colours. It’s a technique that has been practiced for centuries. In the office, yellows and oranges are particularly useful in terms of inspiring productivity and creativity.

5. Organisation

We all seem to work better with an organised structure around us. Everyone knows where everything is. There’s no confusion about placements. Best of all, there’s no clutter. It’s very easy to get distracted when the office is full of mess! When there is a clear, set structure, you create a much better environment for productive work.

6. Consider Open Plan and Closed Spaces

Most modern offices follow the open plan design. It’s something that the tech startups of the world believe in religiously. It certainly is great for accidental collaboration and teamwork. It’s perfect for exchanging ideas. But, just remember that some of your best employees don’t thrive in this environment. Sometimes, they need a closed, quiet space to think. They need isolation to power through a big project. It’s your job to cater for both personalities.

Follow these steps, and you’ll introduce a much better working environment into your office building. Good luck!
