Many of us who love design would like nothing better than to run our own business. The thought of working from home, being your own boss, and unlimited earnings. That’s what drives us! However, starting your own graphic design business is no walk in the park. There are so many different things to think about, which is what puts so many people off.

If you’re thinking about starting up a graphic design business, then you’re going to need some help. Here are some quick tips to get that business off the ground.

1. Get A Website

Before you start anything else, make sure you have a website. You’ll need a catchy domain name and some basic web hosting. Work with a web designer to create a site that reflects you, your work, and your personality.

2. Build A Portfolio

Put together any previous work you’ve done for other clients. This is going to be your brand new portfolio. Make sure you’ve asked permission from your customers first! Make sure your portfolio is easy to find on your new website. Most people will want to see what you’ve done before.

3. Write Some Content

Although you may love the minimal look for your website, Google does not. If you want to rank in search engines, you’re going to need some content. This will also be helpful for potential clients. Write up a blurb for the home page, an about page, and a contact page. At the very least!

4. Search Engine Optimisation

We’ve briefly touched on search engine rankings. This is key if you want people to find you when searching for graphic designers. Unless you’re a pro yourself, this is best left to an SEO agency who know what they’re doing.

5. Start Blogging

Along with your website content, you should have a blog too. This is a great way to show off what you know about all things design. It’ll also help with the social media side of things (more on that later). Put together some truly interesting content that people feel compelled to share.

Set up new social media accounts for your business. Don’t use your personal Twitter to talk shop or vice versa. It’s always good to have separate accounts. Start building up your followers by following any relevant users. There are other ways to build up your social numbers too.

7. Email Everyone You Know

Email your parents, your friends, the man next door. Let everyone know about your new business. It’s also a good idea to put your new website address in the signature of your email. This will get the word out to everyone you’re in contact with. You can then build a strong online relationship with potential customers.

8. Contact Clients

Sometimes, you need to bring the business to you. Contact old clients and let them know you’ve set up a new business. Make sure you’re not breaking any data protection laws or annoying your previous employer. You may also want to put the word out to new clients. Get in touch with local businesses and let them know you’ve just started up. You’ll be surprised at how many will be interested.
