8 Tips For Getting Work In A Design Studio

The right equipment and a wonderful grasp of design are simply not enough to become a successful designer. Your job doesn’t end at building sites, you also need to manage everything from marketing to planning and execution.

So, when looking for a job at a design studio, keep these important things in mind and maybe later your colleges will call you a “design master”.

1. Develop Communication Skills

Can you present yourself and explain why you’ve created this particular design? Why this design is the right choice for your client’s business? Can you resolve arguments?

It is obvious that good communication skills can help you advance in any field, especially in web design when talking to clients and demonstrating your work.

Only the fittest web designers can survive in this competitive world. So, develop your communication skills in order to be successful, stand out from the crowd, let potential clients know about yourself, and mark your presence.

2. Plan and Research

Many designers rely solely upon inspiration in their work. This is a wrong approach right from the start. The fact is that planning and research are more valuable. They can save you tons of time, resources and money.

Plan thoroughly before plunging into design process:

  • > Investigate about the client’s company.
  • > Ask the client about his needs and requirements.
  • > Find out what his competitors are up to.
  • > Make a design sketch.

3. Assess Your Work

Creative professionals and success-driven designers should be able to accept criticism, implement feedback, and have a good eye for pointing out mistakes. The best way to judge the success of your website is to put yourself in the target audience’s shoes. What’s also helpful, is to ask other people to analyse your work for inaccuracies.

4. Keep Up with New Trends

Design technologies change almost every day. New techniques are being introduced constantly. To keep up with the latest innovations, dedicate some time to learning and understanding design trends. Get to know what’s new and what’s gone to the dogs. After all, prevention is better than cure.

Try to appear newer and fresher than your competitors in order not to lose your business.

Extra to design skills it’s also important to know subjects like modern HTML, CSS, SEO, JavaScript UI techniques, and to build a foundational site. Even a general understanding will certainly land you a better job.

5. Gain Experience

Your success depends upon your experience in the field. Experience is even more important than qualifications or skills. Your potential employers and customers will definitely ask about your previous experience, what projects have you completed, and what companies have you worked for. The more experience you get, the quicker you’ll move up your career ladder.

6. Keep an Up-to-Date Portfolio

The portfolio is the best instrument for designers to show what they can do, what they have done, what’s their work style, and what clients can expect. Maintaining an up-to-date portfolio is crucial for success.

It is a reliable evidence of what you are capable of. Show your potential clients the full range of your work – layouts, content management, composition, typography, colours, techniques. Think through every detail. And it has to look great!

Your personal site says a lot about who you are as a designer. No one will forgive you if your site has broken links, typos, poorly written code, and bad graphics. Remember, your site doesn’t have to be state-of-the-art or complex, but it does need to work.

7. Get to Know the Company

Before an interview you need to get to know the firm you are trying to land a position with. Do a background research to have an understanding of what they do. Go through their website, check them out on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Google+).

If you want to be taken seriously as a candidate, when the interview begins, stay in control of the dialogue. Ask questions, be engaged, demonstrate your interest in the position. And don’t forget to make eye contact! Those basic social skills are extremely important.

8. Be Proactive

You have always dreamt of working at a specific company but they don’t have a job opening? Don’t be frustrated. Instead, try connecting with someone in the firm. Sometimes it is more important than sending your CV or submitting an application. Something will eventually open up and the company will start with people they already know. So get to know people, start a conversation, have your foot in the door.

Wrapping Up

What you need to make a successful career in web design is determination and persistence. It is a challenging field. So be patient, try to cope with every situation, and don’t give up if things don’t go the way you expect them to.

Are you practicing those tips in your professional life? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below.
