The origins of casinos can be traced back thousands of years, and they have evolved massively to become the huge business that they are today. Originally the preserve of the rich, places like Las Vegas helped to glamourise their image and have helped to open them up to gamers from all backgrounds. Like so many other industries, the casino business has also been transformed by the advent of the internet. Let’s go over a brief history of casinos so you can discover more about them.

1. Early Origins

There is recorded evidence of gaming taking place in ancient China as far back as 2300 B.C. and every society across the world since then has records of similar practices taking place. In fact, one Roman emperor even designed his carriage so that people could throw dice while they travelled! The French are credited with creating the first deck of playing cards in 1387, and 1440 saw the first full deck of cards printed. In the 16th century, many of today’s most popular casino games including blackjack and roulette were being played.

2. The Golden Era

The Europeans brought their love of gaming across to America and county-funded lotteries were created. With the acceptance of a range of different activities, gaming houses became common across the US and a set of playing cards found themselves into houses up and down the country. Even George Washington and Benjamin Franklin had their own sets printed. Throughout the 19th century, the industry continued to flourish as people from all walks of life enjoyed gaming.

3. The Rise of Las Vegas

During the prohibition years in America, gaming, like alcohol, was also an industry that ended up being outlawed in many states. Nevada brought gaming back again in 1931, but the first city to emerge as a major gaming centre was Reno, not Las Vegas. But after the Second World War, Vegas exploded in popularity as it became associated with its bright neon lights and stunning array of entertainment options. The 50s and 60s saw some of the most famous casinos in the world start to spring up, and it thrived massively.

4. Increased Accessibility

Now not just confined to specific locations, towns all over the world boast casinos. As well as gaming, a huge number of them offer a wide range of entertainment options as they try to mimic the success of institutions like Las Vegas. And since the rise of the internet, online roulette and blackjack are just two of the games that have become readily available. Like so many things in life, the internet has meant that gaming is available to people without the need to leave their own homes.

This gives you a good overview of the story so far and what has led us to this point. Casinos are a long-standing industry which have been around for hundreds of years and it seems like they will continue to adapt and change to meet the desires of new gamers.
