All over the world, industries are being revolutionised by amazing new technology. The shipping business has not gone unnoticed in this change either. In the busy digital world of today, advances in technology have resulted in far more efficient, green, and good shipping services. Whether by air or by sea, the shipping industry has been changed forever. Here are some ways in which this has happened, according to eshipper.com.

1. GPS Navigation while at Sea

As recently as 2011, many of the shipping companies around the world that employed sea transport were using paper charts. You might think this incredulous, but it is true. It was only in 2012 that all ships became required by international maritime law to have an electronic charting and navigation system. Before then, ships simply didn’t use them. This led to more lost and delayed shipments, all of which compromised the supply chain in many ways.

With the ECDIS satnav for ships, navigation has become a lot easier. A combination of technologies correlates with each other to get work done. These include electronic charts, identification systems, GPS, and radar. The risk of a ship getting lost or grounded has been significantly reduced because of this technology. This has led to lower insurance costs for shipping as well, which has brought about a better profit margin for shipping companies around the world.

2. Connectivity Solutions Lead to More Morale

If there is one thing any human desires, it is contact with others. Back in the good old days, a ship at sea only had radio systems on the bridge to stay in contact with the mainland. Ship-to-ship contact and communication inside a vessel were easy enough. Outside communication was nonexistent. However, crew welfare has now been greatly improved due to the addition of satellite communications. Every ship out there today has working wireless internet, as well as satellite phones. Crews are able to keep in touch with their families and friends. Better crew satisfaction means a higher chance of goods being delivered on time and in good condition.

3. More Environmentally Friendly Solutions

Shipping freighters use bunker oil engines to propel themselves. However, this type of fuel is both outdated and inefficient. A single container ship can release as many emissions as tens of millions of cars in its lifetime. The fuel used is even worse than diesel in terms of emissions. However, battery power is being used increasingly in combination with greener fuel like methane propulsion engines. In addition to this, some of the more modern ships are starting to implement sails into their propulsion methods. These are a far cry from the cloth sails of oil – they are high-tech substitutes that can use the smallest breath of wind to move.

Other technologies exist too, all of which make shipping companies far better at what they do. There are tons of new advances happening right now. Some of it is still being researched, while others are well on their way to becoming the norm. With this rise in technology, there isn’t much that is impossible in the world of shipping today.
