Becoming an engineer is a very popular career these days. Bearing that in mind, here are a few tips to help you make it as a self-employed engineer:

1. Make Sure You Have the Knowledge and Experience

I can’t stress how important it is that you have all the knowledge and experience that’s required. Engineering is a very competitive field, mainly because it’s so well paid. If you can make it as an engineer, your bank balance will be very happy.

However, you aren’t going to make it if you don’t have the right qualifications or experience. Make sure that you have the proper education and qualifications required to make it as an engineer. You should have a degree in engineering and know all about it. If you do, this puts you in a good position to start freelancing.

Also, you should have some experience. Even if it’s just a few months of unpaid work experience. If you want to be self-employed, you need to have experience behind you. No one will pay you to do jobs if you’re a complete novice. In an ideal world, you’ll have worked as an engineer before.

2. Search for Work Across Multiple Industries

There are many businesses that will hire engineers. It’s such a broad career that opens up loads of windows of possibilities. The most common industry that hires engineers is construction. No doubt there is a civil construction company out there that’s looking for an engineer. They need someone to help with the planning and building of different structures.

The transport industry is another place you’re likely to find engineers. Engineers are required to work on multiple forms of transport. They can be tasked with designing a new train or making sure train tracks are safe and work well. Or, you could work in the aviation part of the transport industry. Spend your time working with planes and designing new parts of features for them.

There are plenty of businesses out there that will want to hire an engineer. The key is to keep your eyes open and search for work across multiple platforms. Don’t confine yourself to just one industry.

3. Join Freelance Websites

If you want to be self-employed, you’ve got to join various freelance websites. Searching for jobs will only get you so far. You want to ensure you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of being hired for work. By joining a freelance site, you’re putting yourself out there. You’re letting people know that you do freelance engineering work, and you’re available.

The key is to create a fantastic profile on all the good freelance sites. This means you have to come up with a unique bio describing your best features. You’ll want to put emphasis on your education and any experience you have. It will also make sense to include any examples of your work or references from previous employees. This is providing evidence to back up your claims of being a great engineer.

Many businesses will scour freelance websites looking for someone to hire for a job. So, it’s important that you’ve signed up to all of them. Plus, sometimes they’ll advertise freelance jobs only on these sites and not on regular job boards.
