Finding a route into the tradesman career is a lucrative path. Statistics continue to point out that plumbers, carpenters, and other handy professionals make good money. The reason? Well, we’re always going to need plumbers! But, what if you’re the entrepreneurial type? Why not break out on your own and start a company from scratch? It’s often tough at first, but the benefits are enormous. You get to run your own company and profit from the whole business. Think you’ve got what it takes?

1. Experience

Plumbing is a career that requires a certain amount of hands-on experience. Simply starting a plumbing company from scratch is almost impossible. Instead, it’s worth building up a core background in the trade first. Take an apprenticeship with an established plumber. Get a few years of hard work under your belt before you break out on your own. This way, you’ll learn all there is to know about plumbing. Plus, you’ll start to make the right contacts and learn about all the correct tools.

2. Equipment and Supplies

Running a company means you’re now in control of all the equipment and supplies. You can no longer just turn up and do your job. You’ve got to think about the entire business. To get started, you’ll probably need a van and a variety of plumbing tools. You’ll also need a backup supply of components like schedule 80 PVC fittings and piping. Ideally, you’ll want to be prepared for any job at any time. Unfortunately, these supplies all cost money and that’s where our next tip comes in.

3. Calculating Startup Costs

Some people can get their business off the ground with little or no startup costs. Unfortunately, that’s quite unlikely for a plumber. Based on all the tools and supplies mentioned above, you’ll need considerable startup capital. If that’s the case, it might be worth considering a business loan. That should cover your initial costs until you begin to make the money back. Start by creating a detailed list of essentials you need, with a complete price list. A bank will also want to see a business plan with a clear timeline for when you’ll start making profit.

4. Qualifications and License

All plumbers and trades people need a license to operate. If you’re starting a new company, you’ll need a certified license from your local authority. This proves to clients that you are qualified to do the job. Some clients will ask to see this before they let you in their house. It’s a simple necessity for a modern plumbing business, so apply early and get it out of the way.

5. Finding Your First Job

The first job is always the hardest. But, once you’ve got it, the ball will start rolling. Start with simple local marketing strategies. You could take out an advert in your local paper to build awareness. You could also drop leaflets around the local area. Sometimes, it’s best to start with an existing connection, so look back through your contact list.

So, do you still think you’ve got what it takes? If so, you’ve got a bright, entrepreneurial future ahead. Good luck!
