The Predatory Bird is the website of grown-man-skateboarder John Rattray. He is a fan of moving words and pictures. The Bird is mythical, it attempts to explore and examine the world. The site has an online shop stocking obsessively selected items.
The Predatory Bird is generally held to be some eccentric relative of the gulls that wheel and swoop and coldly scream above the streets of Aberdeen, Scotland, where Rattray spent his first 18 years. Once a week (or thereabouts) this terrible feathered beast lands to regurgitate some of the garbage it has swallowed on it’s journey. That bile and garbage is then digitized and presented to you as a stream of stimulating blog posts.
At its best it pecks off the diamond studded earlobe of extreme sports to reveal the fragile blood-spurting jugular, it yanks off the brand-name sock of the mainstream to reveal the ingrown toenail of reality beneath.
A Reading by Div
Div reads an excerpt from Rats in the Trees by Jess Mowry to enhance a blog post about that classic collection of stories about Robbie, a young black runaway skater kid who travels to Oakland where he meets a group of skaters that call themselves The Animals. The collection received a PEN Josephine Miles Award for excellence in literature in 1990.
Riding The Long White Cloud
Riding the Long White Cloud was a bicycle skate trip. It was shot and edited by the Vancouver based FriendlyFire productions.

The Wood Crafter
This video is of Andy. He operates a small wood shop in Vancouver where he has made a miniscule number of the first ever Predatory Bird products. This is the probably the only time this particular process will be used. There are 50, some of which are completes with Thunders Deluxe made specially.
Spiritquest – Behind The Scenes Of A Russell Houghten Production
thepredatorybird.com sent a videographer with Russell Houghten as he wrapped up shooting on his amazing Transworld Cinematograper Project. This videographer claimed to be a “documentarian”. He further claims that this odd, cryptic short in 3 acts “perfectly illustrates the darkness and light that is central to Russell’s creative process.”
Peter Brings The Shadow To Life
The title of this video by Joe Pease comes from This Essay which contains paragraphs such as, “It is not uncommon for children to play with their shadows or to imagine that they are tangible. However, in order to grow up, children must leave behind this fantasy…no one ever fully grows up. Instead, growing up is a process that continues throughout life.” Of course, it might just be a bunch of shadows.
Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Allow me to introduce you to Andy. He was the head chef of the Hilton hotel in Coylumbridge, near Aviemore, in the highlands of Scotland for many years. He describes the incredible Predatory Bird cruiser board (the prototype used in The Lifestyle Promo is his prop) and he considers the current state of skateboarding from his unique point of view.
