Being an entrepreneur means wearing many hats, so to speak. From doing the admin, to replying to emails, to making the big business decisions; they are all part and parcel of a working day. Especially if you are solo in business. But as your business grows, there will be more and more chance of you becoming a leader in business, as you take on staff or suppliers to help your business to succeed and keep going. And not only that, but you need to lead a business that is your baby, and one that you’re passionate about growing. So what can you do to make sure that you are able to lead the business well?
Not all entrepreneurs are able to lead businesses naturally. They may be fine when they are on their own. But having to be in charge of other people can be a little too much. So you need to know what to do, so that you can grow your business, and lead a team to success. Here are some tips to help you to become a well-rounded leader, so you can motivate and inspire.
1. Work Alongside
If you are just seen as the ‘big boss’ then it isn’t going to be good for your team or for the business. You need to be approachable as their leader, and get involved with all aspects of the business. You may not be able to do so all day every day. But from time to time, it means getting your stuck in and helping out. See what they are working on, and you can learn from each other.
2. Get Educated
It can be hard to lead a team that knows more about something than you. That doesn’t mean you have to become an expert in every aspect of the business. But you need to know what they should be doing for their job, so that you can manage them and check that they are doing what they are doing. As a manager or a small business, it could be worth looking at CIPD course from AVADO Learning, to give you a better understanding about human resources. This could be beneficial if you have not worked as a leader or manager before, and not had a team under you.
3. Humility Goes A Long Way
Being someone that is humble can mean a lot when you’re at work. Learn from each other and admit when there have been errors. No one wants to work for something that is arrogant and full of themselves. Show that you do have a human side to you, and it will make the place a better place to work for everyone involved.
4. Inspire Your Team
As with parenting, if your answer for people asking why something should be done, is ‘because I said so’, then the chances are that you’re not doing a particularly good job, or have no idea what you’re doing. So motivate and inspire your team by helping them look at the bigger picture. Share goals and talk about how they can help you all get there.
