We all understand the importance of keeping our homes cool during the summer and warm during the winter. However, we can’t enjoy these benefits without consistently performing a little maintenance on our HVAC systems. Many people are not aware of the maintenance that they should be performing themselves, to keep their systems running well. Luckily, there are a few simple things that you can do to keep your unit running well.
1. Change Your Filters
Changing your filters as recommended can reduce your utility bill by as much as 15 percent. Filters aren’t expensive and they are relatively easy to change. When they aren’t changed regularly, your unit doesn’t perform as well as it should and it works harder.
2. The Outdoor Unit
Most of us don’t know a whole lot about the inner workings of an HVAC system. However, we can still do our part. Keep the exterior unit free and clear of dirt, sticks, and leaves. If enough these things build up, they can affect the function of the outer unit. Keep it clean. You will be doing a lot to keep your unit running well.
3. The Yearly Service Check
Most of us aren’t HVAC service technicians. We haven’t been trained on all the ins and outs of our units. We wouldn’t know the difference between turnstile parts and AC parts. This is why we need a professional service tech to inspect our units yearly. This provides us with all the benefits that come from a thorough in-depth look at our systems. The technician may need to refill coolant, check the parts, and make sure that everything is performing as it should. This also gives you an opportunity to ask questions and supply information if needed. This is a vital service that you should have yearly if you want to keep your system running optimally. It’s good to perform the routine maintenance on your unit. However, routine maintenance doesn’t address the machine parts and other areas that can affect performance.
Take care of your HVAC system and it will take care of you. Perform the routine maintenance needed to keep your system at its best. Make sure you have your system serviced annually by a professional technician. Although the routine maintenance you perform is extremely beneficial, you still need to have your system checked by a professional yearly.
